If you are like me, the typical college student, you probably find yourself struggling to make ends meet each month. What if I told you that I know an easy way to make up to $260 extra bucks each month, sounds pretty nice huh? This easy way to make extra money each month is to donate plasma for only about two hours a week. Plasma, simply put, is basically the water in your blood. Plasma is used in many medical situations like to help heal burn victims or used to make a lot of medications. Because plasma is used in so many medicines, it is in high demand. There are two places near campus that you can donate plasma at. One is called Yale Blood Plasma, and is located about a block up from Yale and Central. The other place is called ZLB Plasma and is located about a block up from San Mateo and Central. You can donate up to two times a week at either place. You are only allowed to donate at one location or the other, not both locations at the same time. Both locations pay $40 the first two times you donate, after the first two donations though; the Yale Plasma location pays more each week. If you decide that you want to donate, give yourself about 4 hours for the first time. When you go for the first time you NEED to have a social security card, a state issued ID and a piece of mail addressed and postmarked to you in the past 30 days. If you are missing one of these things you will not be allowed to donate. The first time you go in it takes about 4 hours because they have to do a long physical on you to make sure you are healthy enough to donate. Each time after that it only takes about an hour, twice a week. One day each week you will make $20, and the second time you donate you will make between $22-37 depending on what your weight is.
This adds up to between $200-260 a month if you go both times each week. Doing this two hours of work each week can easily add up to paying for things like car insurance or your food each month. Because this process is taking a lot of water out of your blood it is very important to stay hydrated. This means that the day before you donate you need to drink a lot of water so you don’t get dehydrated or sick. It is important to start drinking a lot of water the day before you donate, not the day you donate because it takes your body time to get the water absorbed in your system. If you do decide to start donating plasma, I think you will find that the two hours a week is well worth the large amount of extra money you can make each month to help ends meet!
